DYNEK catgut sutures

 After months of exhaustive research into the veracity and probity of Dynek's catgut sutures, undertaken by Dynek's Quality Assurance and Research Department, headed by Dr Tim Kaethner, PhD, Dynek continues to supply catgut sutures to medical practitioners and veterinary surgeons in Australia and internationally. 

Dynek's sourcing of catgut and its manufacturing processes were put under meticulous scrutiny to ensure that to our best knowledge our Plain and Chromic catgut sutures are not only BSE-free, but present minimal disease risk to livestock when used in veterinary interventions. 

Dr Kaethner said the extensive research into the source of the raw materials meant that surgeons and doctors could be assured that Dynek catgut had been obtained from quality-assured sources, and that its treatment and manufacture of catgut sutures are to the highest standard. 

Catgut has been used in surgery for hundreds of years and although sutures made from artificial fibres have made in-roads, catgut sutures are still very much in demand throughout the world. Being a natural product, catgut is totally absorbable, and remains extensively used for external and internal stitches. 

“Worldwide concern over Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE, or Mad Cow's Disease) has brought greater scrutiny on the sources of catgut”, Dr Kaethner said. 

“We have been buying catgut from the same source since the late 1980s.  We have never sourced catgut on the open market or from unknown sources.  By knowing our suppliers directly, we are assured that our catgut comes from the highest quality BSE-free sources.  We believe we are the only company in Australia to be permitted to sell catgut”, Dr Kaethner said.

Dynek catgut sutures come in USP sizes 6/0, 5/0, 4/0, 3/0, 2/0, 0, 1, 2 and 3, and are provided with and without needles attached.  Dynek catgut sutures are available either as Plain or Chromic, the choice between the two forms being determined by the rate of healing in the tissue in which the suture is to be used.
